Jazz band hits the PAC stage with pros
February 2, 2015
Music stands cluttered around the room, different instruments tuning, kids trying to regain their arm space, and white music sheets flying everywhere — a sign to any music student that a big event is coming up. Six professional jazz musicians will join the Wenatchee High School jazz band this week for the annual Jazz Workshop.
“It’s really fun and it’s something most people don’t get to do,” freshman Andrea Day said. “It makes you feel special to be in [the] Wenatchee High School jazz band.”
The musicians, who fly in from Los Angeles, all play different instruments. There will be a professional player on the saxophone, trombone, trumpet, piano, bass and drums.
“This was started by Jeff Sandberg about 15 years ago,” Band Director Jim Kovach said. “We started with one musician coming up and it’s expanded since then.”
Their help and guidance doesn’t just stop with the WHS jazz band. Pioneer, Orchard, and Foothills middle schools will come to the high school to join rehearsals. The Eastmont Junior High and the Eastmont High School jazz bands come across the river to join in the workshop as well. Although, the musicians themselves are all inspiring even with a class full of people.
“They are really cool and really low key,” senior Claire Devereaux said.
“They are all around good mentors,” sophomore Spencer Engel said.
On Feb. 5, the professional jazz musicians will perform at 7:30 p.m. at the Numerica Performing Arts Center. The students will be able to demonstrate their talents at the PAC on Feb. 6 and perform with the professionals at 7:30 p.m.
