Newberry, Danko lead Apple Leaf staff at State
March 25, 2015
Wenatchee High School senior Bryce Newberry won the Lu Flannery Outstanding Journalist Award at the Washington Journalism Education Association’s conference in Puyallup on March 21.
Also, six of WHS’s eight competitors received awards ranging from the highest, superior, to excellent to honorable mention.
By winning Outstanding Journalist, Newberry claimed a $2,000 scholarship. The last time a WHS student won the award was in 2004.
Freshman Chris Danko led The Apple Leaf staff by earning the newspaper staff’s only superior award in feature reviews. After watching a barbershop quartet sing, Danko wrote a review piece on the group, earning him the honor.
“At first I was like ‘Oh great –– that sounds like I did pretty well,’” Danko said. “When I found out that it was the highest award you could get, I was surprised –– I’m only a little freshman. It just goes to show that even if you’re a freshmen… you can do stuff, you can win, and you can do [things] in this high school.”
Staff members who won excellent awards were Newberry (news writing); senior Eduardo Ramos (newspaper layout); senior Kiana Wilson (editorial writing); and junior Evie Hyde (sports feature writing). In addition, sophomore Moses Lurbur received an honorable mention for his work in sports photography.
“I am extremely proud of my staff,” said WHS Student Media Adviser Dave Riggs. “I keep telling them hard work pays off, and this just proves that.”

Congratulations to everyone on The Apple Leaf staff! The work being done there is among the best ever published at WHS. Bryce has been a huge part of the online success, connecting the newspaper to its fans and others interested in WHS news all around the country (and world). I’ve had the chance to work with him in several roles, and he’s deserving of the Outstanding Journalist scholarship. I knew Lu Flannery, for whom the award is named, and she would be delighted to see the success at Wenatchee High School and the wonderful journalists from Bryce to Chris and everyone else. And, of course, a lot of credit goes to Mr. Riggs and his leadership, instruction and advice. Keep up the great work, everyone!
