Junior Dane Gillin is walking onto the Wenatchee Valley College field today at 5 p.m. with the rest of the District Champion Wenatchee High School varsity team with one objective in mind: to score the first and last goal in the game against Skyline.

“That’s been our motto all year. Our coach always tells us that before games. But we’re going to fight to the end,” Gillin said.

Entering their first round of State, the long road behind them may be rivaled only by the long road ahead in their journey to State championships.

In their game against Sunnyside on May 12, the team won 5-4 to earn their District Championship title. Junior Miguel Viramontes led the team with two goals, followed by freshman Luis Navarette and senior Giovanny Soto with one goal each.

“We started out really slow,” senior Chris Trussel said. “They got two goals in the first two minutes. It happened again in the second half. They scored two more goals to tie the score up. Then we just kept going back and forth from there until we went into penalty kicks.”

Baseball

Wenatchee High School claimed the District Championship by defeating Moses Lake 5-3 in the District Championship on May 16 and will play Decatur High School on May 23 in the first round of State games. Senior Jacob Prater went 2 for 3 with 2 RBIs, and junior Grady Miller gave up only five hits while pitching a complete game.

“Shouldn’t have been as close as it was, but we got it done. That’s all we needed,” Prater said.

League awards were also given out this weekend; Miller was awarded Pitcher Of The Year and Prater was given Shortstop Of The Year. The team was awarded nine First Team All-League spots overall and one honorable mention.

Softball

Last week, Wenatchee High School softball was swept by first in the league Moses Lake in a three-game series comprised of a single game at home on May 12 followed by a road doubleheader on May 15.

The Panthers face the Davis Pirates at 4 p.m. today at Walla Walla Point Park for the first round of playoffs.

“We didn’t play like we should have [on May 12],” senior Carley Gangle said. “I just feel like we could have hit better, we could have played defense better.” The Panthers fell to the Chiefs 12-0.

However, the Panthers moved up in their doubleheader, losing narrowly 4-3 and 7-5 in the doubleheader on May 15.

“Both games we actually played real good ball,” Michaels said. “Our girls played great. We had our chance and it just slipped away from us. The umpire didn’t help us out on the one call or we would have had the win. Our bench helped us out quite a bit just yelling and screaming, they were upbeat. I just think it was a team effort all around.”

“I don’t think [the losses are] going to affect us in a negative way,” Michaels said. “The girls seemed upbeat and it made us tougher. I think we are going to go [into playoffs] and play real good ball.”

Tennis

Dominating their competitors in the Big 9 District championship this weekend on Eastmont High School’s home courts, Wenatchee High School boys and girls tennis teams both took home District titles, rounding out their twin undefeated 13-0 seasons as they head into the State championship in Richland May 29-30. Both WHS teams have claimed their respective league and district titles.

Sophomore Hannah Stonas placed second at Districts in her singles competition. Stonas will be accompanied by fellow girls tennis players and doubles partners freshman Yazmina Qazi and sophomore Anna Davenport, who placed third at Districts and will be going to State as the alternate doubles team.

Sophomore Jack Yount placed first at Districts in singles, followed by junior Cameron Mandelis. Sophomores Tobi Butler and Isaiah Banken took first place in doubles.

Mandelis, Butler, and Banken will all be moving on to the State level.

Boys Golf

The boys golf team tied for the District 6 Championship at the Moses Lake Country Club on May 18 with a team score of 645.

“Our team performed really well that day. We had people that came in clutch when they needed to and that really helped us push into trying for first place,” senior Brandon Steele said.

The top individuals were senior Brady Kuntz who shot a 77-75 for a total score of 152, Steele who shot a 78-83 for a total of 161, and sophomore Nick Beeson shot an 84-77 for a total score of 161.

Kuntz and Beeson will be moving on to State, and Steele is an alternate.

“I think both Brady [Kuntz] and Nick [Beeson] will do well [at State Championships], they both have the game to compete at the State level,” Steele said. “Me being an alternative, I have to sit and wait until someone from the Big Nine drops out and then I step in.”

The boys will have State Championships at Qualchan in Spokane on May 27 and the girls will have State Championships at Indian Canyon Golf Course in Spokane  also on May 27.

Track

The Columbia Basin Big 9 (CBBN) Inter City Track Championships were held May 14 in Yakima where Wenatchee competed with teams from Davis, Eastmont, Eisenhower, Sunnyside, and West Valley. The meet was unscored, so there are no team placings.

Up next for the track team is the CBBN District Championships Day 1 on Thursday, May 21 at the Eastmont Wildcat Stadium.

At the Inter City meet, for the boys team, senior Cole Christman led the way with first place in the 800 meters followed by senior Austen Lane in second. Senior Killion McGinnis placed first in the high jump while junior Julien Gibassier placed second. Senior Chris Rodriguez placed second in the 100 and third in the 400. Junior Charles Marshall placed second in the discus and junior Joseph Adamek placed third in the javelin.

On the girls team, senior Alissa Sealby placed first in both the long jump and triple jump. Junior Rilea Dills placed first in both the javelin and shot put, and second in the discus. Sophomore Isabelle Dressel placed second behind Dills in the shot put. Senior Lindsey Wapato placed first in the 300 hurdles, second in the long jump, and third in the 100. Sophomore Katie Dodge placed first in the pole vault. Freshman Allison Flynn placed second in the triple jump and third in the long jump. Senior Alexis Heuchert placed second in the 100 and freshman Ariana Escobedo placed second in the 200. Seniors Kirsten  Nygard and Elena Kahn placed second and third in the 2 kilometer steeplechase. Kahn also placed second in the 3200. Freshman Aly Keating placed third in the high jump.

Rugby

Schoolhouse Rugby Club lost their first match this season, 44-19, to Rainier Plateau Highlanders in the State finals match on May 17.

“We didn’t play to our full potential. We worked all week on a game plan, but when it came to game day we didn’t follow through,” senior team captain Nick Olsen said. “The guys played really hard. It was just a couple of little mistakes that cost us the match.”

Olsen is extremely disappointed with the loss. The last two years State finals matches have also ended in losses for Schoolhouse.

“We all played good in the first half making good tackles and stuff, but second half we started to slow down and they took advantage of that,” senior Scoutt Naubert said. “It’s pretty disappointing after five years to get another second place in the State Championships.”

Lacrosse

The Wenatchee Valley Thunder concluded their season with a loss to Providence at home, 9-8 in the first round of high school lacrosse playoffs.

“I was disappointed that we lost. The last two years we lost in the first of the playoffs also, so this year we were hoping things would be different. Unfortunately, things did not end up that way,” senior midfielder Adam Chvilicek said. “I thought we had a good chance of winning, we watched film, we had a good week of practice. We were pretty prepared. Unfortunately, things did not turn out the way we wanted it to.”

Concluding with a nail-bitingly close score, neither team dominated the matchup.

“We started off really well and got a lead, but in the second half they came back. At the end of the game, we were going back and forth. Anybody could have won,” Chvilicek said.

The Thunder concluded their season with a final record of 13-5.
