Sam Martin question and answer
Senior cross country and track athlete shares his thoughts on the environment, his hero and biking in an interview with The Apple Leaf
Q: If someone gave you a million dollars what would you do with it?
A: Probably use it to pay for college, then use it to take a gap year and go travel. Maybe give some to charity, I don’t know, probably not. Let’s be honest.
Q: What’s the biggest problem you see in the world right now?
A: The environment, global warming, stuff like that. We’re not preserving the environment.
Q: What do you do to help the environment?
A: My family recycles, of course. I’ve done some cleanup stuff, but I really don’t have that much time. I just try to respect it, I guess. I reuse my lunch bags.
Q: How do you suggest we fix it?
A: Respect for the environment, and treating it right, letting it be.
Q: Who do you look up to?
A: Probably (WHS class of ‘13) Jack Dunley, because Jack is a warrior.
Q: What do you like to do in your free time?
A: I like to bike, road and mountain biking. In the summer I bike all the time. Do you know where the homestead is? It’s behind Sage Hills. I bike there a lot. Then for road biking I’ll just go to Leavenworth. I feel like it’s [more fun] than running because I get to go a lot faster and see a lot more. My brother got me to do it, and then my family started to do it after my brother got really into it. We got really into it.
Q: What’s your favorite class?
A: Definitely Mrs. Symonds. She’s funny and that’s like the only class I can say I’m really excited to go to.
Q: What are your political views?
A: I don’t know. My parents are Republican and my brother and sister are both really Democrat. I feel like I’m Green Party/Tea Party, kind of. I don’t want to be in debt but I also want to preserve the environment. I want to help people but sometimes I feel like people just need to help themselves. But I don’t feel like the environment can really help itself. I think the environment and humans should be equal in our government’s eyes.
Q: If you were stuck on a desert island with only three other people, who would they be?
A: Let’s think about this one. Let’s see, we’ll make this interesting. The North Korean leader, I think it’d be interesting to be around him, especially in the desert. Kim Jong Un or whatever his name is. And then someone that would talk a lot. Let’s say, Jack Black. He might be interesting to listen to. And then, I really want to say Helen Keller…but I’ll say [WHS head track coach] Bob Bullis. Because Bob will lead us to victory.
Q: If you could be any animal what would you be?
A: Probably a seagull. Cause seagulls get to do whatever they want. If I was a seagull I’d be hanging out by Ivar’s getting free fries. I’d probably make sure I crap on a lot of people. Actually, I’d definitely do that.
