Apple Leaf staffers won awards at the National High School Journalism Convention from April 6-9, with the overall paper receiving 10th in Best of Show.

Sophomore Sylvia Hwang

Sophomore Sports Editor Sylvia Hwang got an honorable mention for Sports Writing, sophomore Staff Reporter Morgan Narby won an award for Review Writing, and senior Brenden Britt won an award for Editorial Writing.

“The people the Apple Leaf staff went up against some of the best student publications in the nation. For them to achieve these awards is very prestigious. It really shows the quality paper published here at WHS,” journalism adviser Jean Butler said.

For the competitors, the write-offs were a bit intimidating.

“It was a little nerve wracking from everyone being in the room, and even more waiting for the awards, but when we finished, whether we won or lost, we all gained something. I learned a lot, and still would’ve, even if I didn’t win anything,” Sylvia Hwang said. “Overall, it was a successful set of days for the Apple Leaf staff.”
