Boys track wins Ray Cockrum Relays, girls place fifth, both look forward to season

The Wenatchee High School boys and girls track and field team started off their season with the Ray Crockum Relays on March 21 at the WHS track with the boys team finishing in first place and the girls team finishing in fifth place.

The meet consisted of teams from Cashmere, East Wenatchee, Kentridge, Kentwood, Lake Stevens, Snohomish, and Woodinville.

In individual events, both the boys and girls teams had nine teammates place above third place. For the boys team, senior Cole Christman placed first in the 1600 meter. Senior Killion McGinnis placed first in the high jump and junior Julien Gibassier placing third. Junior Dalton Sugg placed first in javelin and third in discus. Junior T.J. Harris placed second in the long jump. For the girls team, freshman Allison Flynn placed first in the long jump and second in the triple jump. Senior Lindsey Wapato placed second in the long jump. In shot put, junior Rilea Dills placed second. For discus, sophomore Jalani Stevens placed third.

Both the boys 4×400 relay team, including senior Chris Rodriquez, Christman, senior Reid Lovercamp, and Christian Brandt-Sims, and the 4×800 relay team, Austen Lane, Garrett Britt, Carson Dillard, and Justin Pringle, placed first. While the 4×100 relay team, including Rodriguez, freshman Chris Bishop, Harris, and Lovercamp, placed second.

The girls relay teams also placed with the 4×400 relay team, junior Sophie Marshall, Flynn, freshman Gretta Wiersma, and Wapato, placing third.

“It was a fun meet to prepare us for the important ones,” Wapato said. “There’s a lot of great people on the team and we’re looking forward to the season ahead.”

This was the first of many meets ahead for the track and field team with their next one coming up on Friday at Eastmont.
