Fun Fall Food

Finnley Ottley, Staff Reporter

Fall is the worst season. I don’t even enjoy most of the food. I hate pumpkin pie, pumpkin spice lattes and pecan pie. One thing I do love is apple pie. Apple pie is one of the most delicious desserts in the entire world. Ever since I can remember, I have made my apple pie for family functions. I think my pie is one of the only good parts of fall.

Even when I was younger baking was an outlet for my stress. I loved creating new recipes and I loved impressing people when I was able to complete a complex recipe. The majority of this recipe was made up in my head when I was younger. I have experimented with many different ingredients and ideas. The final product below is officially the best apple pie. (Quick piece of advice, I have always used store-bought pie dough. I think it tastes the same as homemade. I have never met someone that can tell the difference between homemade and store-bought pie crust).

Pie Filling Ingredients

  • 1 cup of sugar
  • ¼ cup all-purpose flour
  • ½ teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • Dash of salt
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 8 cups sliced Granny Smith apples (The only way to make a good apple pie is by using Granny Smith apples. If you don’t have Granny Smith apples, you might as well not make the recipe)
  • 2 tablespoons vegan butter (optional)

Directions

  1. Preheat the oven to 425° F. Mix the sugar, flour, nutmeg, cinnamon and salt in a large bowl. Peel and cut the Granny Smith apples. (I have tried cutting them in many different ways and it always turns out good. It just depends on what you want the taste and texture to be). They can be cut into cubes, thin slices, juliennes or whatever consistent shape.
  2. Mix the apples with the dry ingredients in a large bowl, and add one teaspoon of vanilla.
  3. Remove the chilled pie dough from the fridge. Shape the dough into a greased pie pan, and fill the dough with the pie filling. (If you want a more juicy pie, dot cold butter on top of the pie). Add the top pie crust. Then seal the edges and slit the top. Cover the edges of the pie with aluminum foil to prevent them from burning.
  4. Put the pie in the preheated oven. Bake for 25 minutes, then remove foil and bake for another 15-25 minutes.
  5. Remove from the oven when the crust is brown and juice bubbles through the slits in the crust.

I hope this recipe will bring as much joy for others as it brings me. Even though fall has its ups and its downs, the best part is the time spent with friends and family. This recipe is from the depths of my heart, and it has given me so many amazing memories. I am so excited for another holiday so all of us can fill our kitchens with the smell of a delicious apple pie.
