Girls basketball struggles early

Wenatchee High School’s girls varsity basketball team lost their most recent game to the Sunnyside Grizzlies 71-58 Saturday, Dec. 14, but sees chances for improvement.

On Friday, Dec. 13, the girls lost to Moses Lake at home, 54-43. The lead scorers for that night were junior Amira Chandler and senior Katie Kansky, and for Saturday their lead scorers were Chandler and sophomore Maddi Halberg.

The team’s overall record is 0-5, but Coach Robin Kansky is positive. “Our team’s covenants are awesome. We are working on [improving our] determination, enthusiasm, mental toughness and trust,” Kansky said. “The attitude of the team is great, and we are looking forward to the season as it progresses.”

“We are more about ‘team’ than star players,” Robin said. “All of our kids are leaders and play a key role for our success.”

While the team is struggling with points, a big focus of the team is positive interactions with each other, which they’re succeeding in.

“Our team’s doing good–there’s a lot of returning people and a few new girls,” Sealby, one of the team captains said. “I really feel honored to be a team captain. I have the trust of the coach and it shows my leadership in school and on the team.”

The team captains work hard to improve the point records, but also to pump up the rest of the team.

“I don’t think we’ve reached our potential but we’re improving every game,” Kansky, the second team captain said. “We have high expectations for each other and want to reach our goals. [Sealby and I] set examples to the rest of the team.”

Through the captains’ hard work, the players have experienced exactly what the captains are after: a sense of community.

“I think we have a chemistry, especially since we didn’t lose any seniors,” junior Amira Chandler said. “There’s some things we need to work on, but we’re getting there. I love the team–I was personally practicing all summer, but I still have weaknesses I need to work on.”

“We’re working on [our defense], we’re getting better,” Robin said. “I was proud of the girls’ effort and we have already improved in the past week.”
