Panthers come back after disappointing first loss
The Wenatchee High School Panther football season has kicked off; they have played two games so far, bringing their season record to 1-1.
As the team lost its first game Sept. 6 against the Eisenhower High School Cadets 21-27, senior quarterback Dillon Sugg said, “We went in a little aloof and more overconfident than we should have.”
WHS Coach Scott Devereaux said the season could have gotten off to a better start, but “the effort is awesome, and that’s what’s most important.”
That effort was evident in senior Isaiah Brandt-Sims, who ran 151 yards rushing and 114 yards receiving.
“We are focusing on the things we didn’t do very well the first game. We’re just fixing our mistakes and moving forward,” said senior Spencer Smith.
The team played its second game Sept. 13 against Davis High School. Wenatchee had a great comeback, beating Davis 53-13.
Davis defense concentrated mainly on preventing Brandt-Sims from running. Their plan left room for Sugg to throw three touchdowns and set the school record, with 300 passing yards. All three touchdown throws were caught by Smith, who had 168 yards by the end of the fourth quater.
After the win, Sugg said things had changed since last game. “ The offense was more on point, everyone was confident in what they were doing, and the defense really stepped up.”
The Panthers will have their first home game on tonight, Friday Sept. 20 at the Apple Bowl at 7 p.m. against Moses Lake High School.
