Freshman Dillon Bair fights back against a Sunnyside wrestler on Jan. 23 to help contribute to a Panther victory.

The Wenatchee High School wrestling team is sending seven wrestlers to Regionals, including two District champions, after taking second at the District tournament at Eisenhower, facing off against the other five teams in the league on Feb. 8.

Senior Kris Garrett took first in the 145-pound weight class, as well as junior Kole Davis in the 191-pound weight class. Taking third in their events and also moving on to Regionals are senior Justice Martinez, juniors Cody Schuyleman, Logan Tidd and Armando Juarez, and freshman Ian Tamngin.

The team also includes four alternates to send in case any injuries or cancellations occur in the District. Those alternates, who each took fourth place, include seniors Noel Suarez and Andrew Lape, junior Elijah Barnett, and sophomore Tomas Benjume.

“We ended up in a three-way tie for second in dual meets league-wise, so we all sat down to determine our next step and decided our team goal was to finish in the top two at Districts,” Coach Ed Valdez said. The team finished the regular season with a 2-3 league dual record and a 7-6 record overall in duals.

Previously, the wrestling team defeated Eisenhower 36-33 on Jan. 23. “It came down to the last match, but we won thanks to Elijah Barnett,” Tidd said. At a home match on Jan. 30 the team lost 48-15 to Sunnyside, with King and Benjume winning their matches to earn the majority of the team’s points.
