Pirates blockade Panther girls
The Wenatchee girls basketball team’s season ended with a 54-52 loss to Davis at Davis High School in the first round of the District tournament on Feb. 20.
WHS came into the fourth quarter leading by a slim margin, and if the Panthers had kept the lead till the buzzer, they would’ve had a spot in the State tournament, which started on March 1.
The District matchup was to be held at the higher seed’s home court, which was decided in the last regular season game, proving to be an equally significant battle. Wenatchee lost 85-61 to Davis at home in that matchup. “We just weren’t ready to play,” Coach Robin Kansky said.
During their 8-7 regular season, the Panthers had beaten Davis twice, once at Davis’s home court, so they had high hopes coming into the District game, which were crushed by a streak of clutch shots by the Davis guards in the final minute of play.
“I always expect us to go to State and to win league,” Kansky said, “so to the end the season like that was a total disappointment. Two of the teams that are still playing, we had beaten. Bellermine Prep and Davis (twice), so we were close, very close.”
“We came out really strong and played really well in the entire game, they just hit the shots they needed to,” junior Ali Sealby said.
