Several Wenatchee High School and local sports teams advanced to postseason play starting May 16. The Apple Leaf sports reporters have been tracking the teams all season long and provide up-to-date information on where the teams go next and results from their recent games.

Tennis

After completing the District semifinals on May 21 in Yakima, Wenatchee High School will send eight members of the girls and boys tennis teams to the State tournament on May 30-31 in the Tri-Cities.

WHS boys advanced two doubles teams, junior Cameron Mandelis and senior Lucas Tilly, and freshman Tobi Butler and junior Josiah Suarez, along with one singles player, senior Sohail Qazi.

The girls team will send three alternates, including senior doubles partners Annie Stefanides and Olivia Morgan and singles player freshman Hannah Stonas from Cascade Christian Academy.

Soccer

The Wenatchee High School boys soccer team made its first appearance at the State tournament since 2005 in Vancouver on May 21, but lost 3-1. Junior Gio Soto broke the all-school record for total goals in a season, scoring the only goal of the Skyview game and his 16th this season. The old record was 15.

On May 16, the Panthers shut out the Davis Pirates at home 1-0, which pushed them to the State tournament. Sophomore Tino Pantaleon had the single goal.

Baseball

The baseball team played Districts last weekend May 16-18 and advanced to State after winning two of three in the District playoffs.

Wenatchee started Districts by beating Sunnyside (9-5) and Eastmont (5-3) on May 17. However, the Panthers lost to Moses Lake (6-5).

The Panthers are heading to State at Yakima May 23-24 as the number two seed out of the District.

Rugby

The Schoolhouse Rugby team ended their season at the State tournament that started May 17. They won a close victory in the first round against Yelm Prairie Mustangs 29-26.

After that, the team faced the Number 1 seed Kent Crusaders, the only team Schoolhouse had lost to all season. They were defeated again and ended the season with a record of 9-3.

Boys Lacrosse

A postseason curse has fallen on the Wenatchee High School boys lacrosse team for the past two years.

Entering their first playoff game against Overlake as the lead team in their league, the team had high hopes for their postseason. The team was especially hoping to avoid a repeat of last year, where the team, again with a good outlook after a successful season, was knocked out of the postseason after just their first match.

Initially, the team put up a good fight in the first half of the game. “We had a tough game against a team from the West side. We contained the ball in the first half … Dane Collier was solid on defense. We could count on him to stop anyone,” junior Logan Tidd said.

But up against a notoriously difficult senior, junior Cory Leenders had the difficult task of blocking him from the cage. “We had a short stretch where the ball got away from us and they got past us. We had to try and come back and unfortunately we didn’t,” junior Austin Schmaltz said.

The final score saw Wenatchee losing 10-6, but the team saw reason to be optimistic despite this disappointing loss. “We had a fun year with a great group of seniors. Without a doubt, this was the game we put the most heart in, the best effort, all year,” Schmaltz said.
