Tennis takes Big Nine league title
After a 6-1 win over Davis on May 9, the Wenatchee High School boys tennis team claimed the Big Nine title. For league matches, the boys have a 9-0 record for the season (as of May 12).
For singles, senior Lucas Tilly, junior Kyle Norland, and sophomore Caleb Nees each won their matches, while sweeping in all doubles matches.
The girls tennis team also claimed a victory over Davis, sweeping in doubles and junior Kate Thies winning in singles. Senior Annie Stefanides said the girls are well on track to take the Big Nine title, but it came down to the Panthers’ May 13 match against Eisenhower. Due to The Apple Leaf’s press date, results were unavailable.
With their only loss against Davis on April 22, the girls bounced back, beating Eastmont on April 29, 4-3, sweeping Sunnyside on May 1, and beating Moses Lake on May 6, 6-1.
Both the girls and the boys ended their regular season on May 13 on their home court, but will continue on to the postseason with Districts and the possibility of State.
WHS will send nine boys and nine girls to Districts on May 17 at Kissel Park in Yakima.
To advance to State, members of the team must place in the top two at Districts in their respective event.
“I think as a team our main goal is to win Districts since we won last year…” Stefanides said. “The ultimate goal would then be to get a singles player and doubles team to State which I think is very doable.”
