Tennis teams win district championships
Both the Wenatchee High School boys and girls tennis teams won the district championships that took place at West Valley beginning on May 14. Five boys and three girls have qualified for the State championships.
The boys doubles team of sophomore Jack Yount and senior Cameron Mandelis won a championship to lead the way for the Panthers.
Freshman Luke Andrewjeski earned second place in boys singles, qualifying for State. Other finalists included the doubles team of sophomore Chapman Canlis and junior Hendrik Keyser, and the team of juniors Isaiah Banken and Tobi Butler.
“It’s unbelievable, beyond all expectations to have five players going to State,” boys tennis coach Lynn O’Keefe said. “Five of the six positions going to State were taken by Wenatchee boys.
Junior Anna Davenport and freshman Kaylynn Noyd took second place in girls doubles. Sophomore Yasmina Qazi took the final position for State in a singles match last night at the WRAC against junior Hannah Stonas, who will be the alternate for State.
“I’m happy for the team, any of us qualifying for State is an accomplishment,” girls tennis coach Norm Armstrong said. “Everyone is competing for a spot.”
The State championships in Richland and will begin on May 27, going through the weekend.
