Volleyball: The basic setup
1. Outside Hitter
“My job is to get kills, and end the point by spiking the ball, to swing hard and be aggressive with every hit,” said junior Maddi Hallberg, one of the varsity outside hitters.
“My height definitely is a strong factor in being able to get above the net and hit the ball down the court…I like playing outside because hitting the ball and getting a kill gets the crowd excited and the team pumped.”
2. Middle Blocker
“I’m blocking middle, outside, and right side, so I’m usually all over the net,” said senior Amira Chandler, one of the varisty middle blockers. “Height is definitely a big thing for a middle blocker cause you’re blocking everywhere on the net, I like it cause I’m really involved in the game.”
3. Setter
“Being a setter is kinda like having to be the leader on the court,” said senior McKenzie Madland, one of the varsity setters. “You have to be able to get to every second ball and set it up the right way so your teammates can hit it… there’s a certain spot you that you have to hit on the net to get the really good kill…you just have to be really fast. I started out playing that postition cause I’m left handed and they say its really awkward to be a left handed setter but it makes it easier to get to the ball, it’s my favorite position.”
4. 5. Defense Specialist
“[My job is to] pretty much just be quick and make sure to get a good pass to the setter,” said senior Tessa Morgan, one of the varsity defense specialists. “[The best part] is getting a good pass to the setter, [the hardest part] is probably having to cover all the back row.”
6. Right Side
“Basically, you are a front row hitter,” said senior Kiara Husted, one of the varsity right side players. “You are blocking outside. You are behind the setter and you take second ball if the setter takes first ball. My favorite part is how you get it all. You block, play back row, hit, cover hits. Blocking is a huge part because you are blocking the other team’s outside, which usually is the strongest hitter.”
