Wrestling team sends two competitors to Regionals
The Wenatchee High School wrestling team placed sixth at the Big 9 District 6 Tournament on Feb. 5-6 at Davis High School in Yakima.
Eight WHS wrestlers placed in the top six of their weight class, with two finalists placing in the top three. Seniors Tomas Benjume and Eric Briley will compete again this Saturday at the Regional Wrestling Tournament, with freshman Andrew Fritz attending as an alternate. Benjume placed first in the 285-pound weight class, and Briley placed second at 145. Fritz barely missed out on a qualifying spot in the top three, placing fourth at 106.
Also placing were junior Jesus Figueroa, fifth at 138; senior Payton Laveque, sixth at 145; junior Ian Tamngin, sixth at 160; freshman Ronin Haynes, sixth at 170; and freshman Emmanuel Ibarra, sixth at 195.
The tournament hosted wrestlers from Sunnyside, Moses Lake, Davis, Eisenhower, Eastmont, Wenatchee, and West Valley, all vying for the opportunity to compete at the Regional Wrestling Tournament on Feb. 13 at University High School in Spokane.
