While the colors of the high school aren’t changing, many student’s basic understanding of Hispanic culture has, thanks to Hispanic Heritage Week put on by MEChA club.
Hispanic Heritage Month ends on Friday, Oct. 15. Members of MEChA (Movimiento Estudiantil Chicana/o de Aztlan) brought different pieces of culture to each lunch period at school. Included in the lunchtime celebration was a pinata, different types of music playing, performances from Mariachi Huenachi, and posters displaying prominent figures within history. There was also a photo booth, face-painting station, as well as booths where the club gave away Hispanic candy to bolster all aspects of the experience.
“The celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month here at WHS gives us a significant opportunity to celebrate the culture and contributions of Hispanics to the United States and to our Wenatchee Valley,” senior
MEChA president and event founder Adrian Pantaleon said. “I’m so proud to be part of a school and community that strives to recognize Hispanic heritage in special ways like what we did this week.”
