ASB starting open public senate meetings, aim for more involvement
Wenatchee High School’s Student Government kicks off its first senate board meeting of the year tomorrow. The meeting is being held after school in the new commons at 3:15 p.m., open to the public, to discuss the upcoming school year.
Some new changes addressed by the ASB have already been created for the 2014-15 school year. Instead of meetings being held right after school at 3:05 p.m., they officially start at 3:15. This gives time for people to clear out of the school and makes the meetings more audible when the senates talk, ASB President Luke Carlson explained. Senate meetings last year were usually during sixth period, but were changed by ASB Adviser Brent Grothe because it helps force the president in sixth period to communicate better with the four other senates.
“I think having to have people show up at an appointed time and commit to their responsibilities is going to actually help senate become stronger,” Grothe said.
This year the ASB will have open senate meetings to students who have ideas or concerns involving our student body.
“[We want] meetings that are more like a city council meeting where the public is invited because they want kids to be more involved in the process as a student government,” Grothe said.
The ASB executive council has many ideas in the works for making this school year enjoyable and impactful by amplifying the student voice.
“As student leaders, you have so much influence on people, and I’m just going to have to really try to get our ASB team to wield that influence in a good way, and to really positively impact the kids at Wenatchee High School,” Carlson said.
