Two boys basketball coaches placed on administrative leave

Dean of Students Mike Franza is now assuming responsibilities as the head coach of the boys varsity basketball team.

Ron Stone and Brandon Hobson, both Wenatchee High School boys basketball coaches, have been placed on administrative leave and Dean of Students Mike Franza has taken over as head coach of the varsity for an undetermined amount of time, Franza confirmed on Thursday.

Math teacher Patrick Loftus “will be assuming the role of the 9th grade boys basketball coach while a personnel matter is being resolved,” Principal Bob Celebrezze confirmed Thursday afternoon.

Multiple sources close to the team told The Apple Leaf that the two coaches have been terminated, but no confirmation of their current employment status was confirmed from district administrators or other school officials Thursday morning. Athletic Director BJ Kuntz was not available for comment. Attempts to reach the basketball coaches were unsuccessful.

Two student-athletes have been suspended from school and the team temporarily, according to multiple sources close to the team. No district or school officials have confirmed those suspensions. The two student athletes will return to school on no later than Jan. 21, according to a source.

Two full days of closed-door meetings with Celebrezze resulted in a letter being sent home to all boys basketball families, indicating that Franza was taking over until the district resolved a personnel issue. Parents were urged to contact Celebrezze with any questions. The Apple Leaf obtained a copy of the letter Wednesday night from a source close to the team.
