“Cakes for College” raises $30,000 for local scholarships
The Keep It In The Valley Foundation raised $30,000 using the“Cakes for College” funnel cake at the 2014 Apple Blossom Food Fair. The money raised will fund scholarships for high school seniors whoplan to attend Wenatchee Valley College. This is the second year of “Cakes for College.”
About 15 students from Wenatchee High School volunteered at the funnel cake stand. Students from Eastmont High School and Cashmere High School participated as well. Community members also pitched in. Each volunteer was asked to work a total of 10 hours.
“It was 100 percent volunteers working there,” sophomore John Kottkamp said. “There were no paid employees.”
Part of the money raised by the stand went to paying for the trailer used during the operation. The stand raised $25,000 for scholarships in 2013. The trailer will be fully paid off by the end of the 2015 Apple Blossom Food Fair, according to junior Christa Dietrich said.
“[The funnel cake stand] is a really cool deal,” Dietrich said. “I hope to get more people involved next year.”
The $1,500 scholarships will be awarded to five WHS students, seven EHS students, one CHS student, one Wenatchee Valley River Academy Student, and one WestSide High School student. There will be 15 total recipients, chosen by the North Central Washington Community Foundation. The five recipients from WHS will be announced during the Senior Awards Night on May 19 in the WHS Commons.
