WHS choir receives excellent ratings in NCW choir contest
Two Wenatchee High School choir groups earned superior ratings and two others received excellent ratings after performing at the North Central Washington Music Educators Association choir contest, which was held March 12-13 at the Performing Arts Center of Wenatchee.
Out of 28 schools from the area, Bel Canto and Chamber Singers earned a superior award, meanwhile, Treble Clef and Bass Clef earned an excellent award. “I’m really proud of what they have done,” , Choir Director Dawn McCormick said. “I’m new to the school so we are kind of building our relationship and the fact that we went there and got superior and excellent is a good feeling.”
The WHS choir is divided into four categories known as: Treble Clef (48 freshmen students), Bel Canto (25 sophomores), Bass Clef (seven freshmen), and Chamber Singers (35 juniors and seniors).
“We got to go and listen to a bunch of choirs and it is pretty cool to see what other people are doing,” sophomore Emma Carlson said.
Students have been rehearsing for almost a month during school and at their homes.
“It’s an amazing program to be in, and just seeing all the new people coming in and everyone working together so well it’s just a phenomenal experience,” senior Hannah Smallbeck said.
The next contest will be April 18 at Columbia Basin College in Pasco, where Chamber singers and Bel Canto will compete against other high school choirs and will perform in front of three adjudicators.
