Choir competition leads into event-filled spring

Choir Director Dawn McCormick

The Wenatchee High School Bel Canto and Chamber singers competed at the Columbia Basin College in Pasco on Friday, April 19. Moses Lake High School’s choir won the concert choir three division, the division Wenatchee High School was in. The competition did not offer any individual or other awards. Despite not receiving any awards, WHS choir director Dawn McCormick believes the two groups had an outstanding performance. “I think both groups had their best performances of the year,” McCormick said. “We had the opportunity to hear some good groups perform as well.” Around 45 separate choir groups from schools from all over Washington state, as well as Oregon and Idaho, competed in the event. The two groups performed the same songs they used in the North Central Washington choir contest on March 12-13. The performance by the Chamber Singer and Bel Canto was assessed by three adjudicators, which gave them both feedback on their performance. Upcoming events for the WHS choir include the pep assembly on April 25, the Wenatchee Apollo Club’s scholarship fundraising concert on May 6 in the WHS auditorium. The choir will perform at the Apple Blossom food fair on May 1 from noon to 1 p.m. The choir will also perform in their Spring concert on May 21. To prepare for these events, the choir must get five new songs ready for performance, McCormick said. “I think we’re prepared [for the upcoming events],” Bel Canto singer sophomore Kenison Maher said.  “We’ve got most of our songs pretty much memorized by now.”
