Club’s fundraiser will cover majority of freshman’s funeral costs
In the wake of the death of freshman Antonio Gonzalez Garcia, the community has reached out to the family by raising money for the funeral, and other expenses. The Interact Club raised $5,300 for the family in just two days.
“For me, it was confirmation that people are good. The generosity in Wenatchee is unique,” French teacher Jon Magnus said, who is the adviser of Interact Club.
Their way of raising the money was straightforward. The club collected donations at school during both lunches and at the football game against Chiawana on Sept. 12, raising $1,200 before halftime.
Gonzalez Garcia died on Sept. 7. The week after his death, WHS counselors set up in the music hall to talk to any students in need.
The family needed $5,800 for the funeral costs, with the vast majority of that being covered by the Interact Club fundraiser alone. An AVID class also had a bake sale during lunch on Sept. 18-19, with all the proceeds going to the family of Gonzalez Garcia.
