Football strong after second loss

With a season record of 3-2, the Panther football team is looking forward to a successful season. Coach Scott Devereaux credits their successful games to a very balanced offense and a defense that can handle the opposing team. Though the Panthers lost 48-7 to Chiawana High School Oct. 4, they remain positive about the future of the season. CHS is ranked third in the state.

“Our goal is to win a league title and as many games as we can,” said Devereaux. “Ultimately, we would like to win the state championship.”

According to Devereaux, the Panthers didn’t do a good job tackling, letting the Riverhawks run circles around them.

The Panthers’ only touchdown was a 20-yard pass by senior Dillon Sugg caught by senior Brock Stone. This play was followed by an extra point kick by junior Garrett King.

Sophomore Joe Sells, who played on varsity during the Battle of the Bridges game, believes that this will be a strong year for the team.

“We’re really hot this year. Well, not like that, but you know what I mean,” said Sells, laughing. “We have a lot of speed and some really good leaders on the team.”

When discussing the touchdown he scored during the Battle of the Bridges, Sells humbly said that he was excited and surprised, because he didn’t expect to score this season, let alone so early in it.

“We need to work on keeping the team confident, but not so confident to where we just assume we have every game in the bag and don’t play as well as we should,” said senior Zach Larsen. “Our real strengths are in our leadership. Our practices are getting harder to where we improve every day. I think we have a real chance at winning a league title this season, and we may get even further.”

The Panthers play their next tonight against Eisenhower High School at 7 p.m. in the Apple Bowl. If the team wins, they will be league champions and have the chance to host a playoff game.
