GEAR UP implements parent engagement program: El Grito de la Prosperidad

Wenatchee High School’s GEAR UP program, for its second year in a row, is executing a two- part series to help increase Hispanic parents’ awareness of how they can contribute to and support their students’ academic success. The parent engagement program, called “El Grito de la Prosperidad” — which means, “A Shout for Prosperity,” will be publicized completely in Spanish.

GEAR UP wants parents to expand their knowledge of our educational system and know where to go if they have any questions.

“Parents ask, ‘How do they access teachers?’” GEAR UP Adviser Angela Prater said. “This program gives Hispanic parents the opportunity to come in and advocate with their [students’] teachers.”

The first series is specifically for the parents of seniors and is held in the DECA room (551) Nov. 18, 20, 25 and Dec. 2, from 6 to 8 p.m. This includes a free dinner and babysitting of children ages 3 to 12.The night consists of Senior Money Night, which will cover information on how to apply to colleges and be prepared, at no cost to parents.

The second part of the series will be for the parents of juniors, which is held in the spring.

If you want your seniors to graduate, then get more involved, Prater said. This program not only gives parents the chance to gain the understanding of their students’ academics, but become a part of it on a much larger scale.
