Golf finishes league play in top three
Girls golf capped off its undefeated season and placed first in the conference with a win against Eastmont May 5.
Boys golf overcame its early-season struggles to finish the regular season in third place in the Big Nine. Sophomore Brodin Knutson earned first-team all-conference honors.
Junior Carly Bozett scored an 80 against in the final girls match against Eastmont.
Girls players Bozett, sophomore Kadi Freund, senior Gabrielle Jones and sophomore Ali Brandt placed first, second, third and fourth respectively of all players in the Big Nine. The team also set five course records this season.
The girls will be competing at Districts on May 12 at the Yakima Country Club.
Girls Coach Doug Merrill noted the difficulty of the Yakima course, and said placing well “will be all about avoiding the disaster holes.”
Junior Brady Kuntz scored a 77 and sophomore Isaak Flynn scored an 83 in their last match against Inland Empire on May 5.
“As a team we did okay, but we definitely could have done better,” said Flynn. “For one, our team is younger this year. A lot of people had to step up this year. People stepped up at different points but it’s kind of difficult with a lot of people who were freshmen just last year.”
The boys will compete at Districts on May 20 at the Rock Island and Highlander golf courses. They will be playing 36 holes in one day.
Boys Coach Stan Opp said the keys to placing well at Districts will be “just to play smart golf and keep the numbers down. It will be a mental grind playing 36 in one day.”
