Knowledge Bowl moves to State for sixth consecutive year
Wenatchee Knowledge Bowl won the AAAA regional championship Feb. 19 against Eastmont and Moses Lake, beating second-place Moses Lake 89-62 and qualifying the team for a spot in the State tournament.
The placing sets a school record of six consecutive years making it to State. The state competition will be held at Arlington High School on March 22.
Seniors Alexa Andre, Bridget Dowd, Sophia Nordt, Daniel Poulson, Riley Rohman and freshmen Brandon Fitzgerald and Hendrik Keyser are the members of the winning team.
“I thought it was going to be close,” adviser Chris Cloke said. “I was confident we were going to State.”
The team will be studying hard to prepare for State. “State is going to be a lot harder than regionals,” Andre said. “We are just really going to have to be quick with buzzing in and we are going to have to study up.”
Knowledge Bowl is a game-show-type competition where students answer questions from three categories, which include high school classes, popular culture, and current events. At some schools, Knowledge Bowl is a class that competitors can take, yet at Wenatchee High School students must come to practice on their own and spend time studying independently.
According to Andre, the members spend a lot of time out of team practice memorizing facts. “We have a secret [studying] method the we’re not supposed to tell anyone about,” she said.
“Our goal is going to be to place, which would be a top-nine finisher in the State,” said Cloke.
Wenatchee has placed three times in its history. The highest WHS has placed is 6th in both 2009 and 2011.
