Mariachi star coming to WHS

Soon to come to the Wenatchee Valley is “America’s Got Talent” finalist Sebastien de la Cruz, a 10-year-old mariachi singer who is touring the country with Wenatchee High School being the only stop in the Pacific Northwest.

Born in San Antonio, de la Cruz began performing in his community and eventually competed on the TV show “America’s Got Talent,” and worked with show host Nick Cannon. De la Cruz made it to the quarterfinals and later went back and made it to the semifinals in the “Wild Card Show.” He has also been the opening act for internationally well-known Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitlán. Throughout Texas, de la Cruz is known as El Charro de Oro (the golden mariachi) with his strong voice that has made him a media sensation.

De la Cruz will be making an appearance at a district wide student showcase, Feb. 14, which will be taking place after daylong workshops for the estimated 200 students involved with mariachi in the Wenatchee School District. The workshops will be taught by Mariachi Estrellas de Chula Vista from San Diego with a 16-piece band. Entrance to the show is by donation.

Also happening at the WHS auditorium, is the 16th annual Mariachi Northwest Festival on Feb. 15. This event will be featuring four groups; Mariachi Huenachi, Wenatchee High School’s advanced mariachi band; Los Hermanos Barajas; Mariachi Estrellas Chula Vista; and a dance group from Seattle, Bailadores de Bronce.

For students with a valid student identification card, the price for a ticket is $15 and $20 for adults.

“This is probably the best show in the Northwest,” said Mariachi Huenachi instructor Ramon Rivera. “We’re really excited to have a singer at (de la Cruz’s) caliber.”

De la Cruz will be performing at the show as well. After the show there will be a meet- and-greet for the community.
