Meet track star Killion McGinnis

April 22, 2015

Individual sports aren’t for everyone, but senior track star Killion McGinnis prefers focusing solely on high jump and improving his own personal best.

“I like track because it’s an individual sport and it’s basically like you compete against yourself every time you go out there,” McGinnis said.

McGinnis has been participating in track since third grade, and has been focusing on high jump since his freshman year. His personal best in this event is a height of 6 feet, 8 inches, which he achieved his junior year and continues to reach this height.

“Killion is working hard at becoming a collegiate high jumper. His strength is his ability to focus on meet days. He has been great to work with and we are excited for his future in track,” track Coach Mike Evans said.

After going to Wenatchee schools through eighth grade, then spending three of his high school years at Eastmont, McGinnis decided to switch back to Wenatchee High School to graduate with his friends.

“I missed all the kids I grew up with, like [seniors] Markus [Stoll] and Chase [Resch] and that whole group of kids. It sucked growing up with them and then not seeing them for 2 years… so I wanted to come back and graduate with everyone I grew up with,” McGinnis said.

McGinnis shares that he also enjoys both the WHS and EHS track programs.

It’s just really a positive vibe to run by the high jump pit because Killion is always there encouraging others.

“My goal is to jump seven feet and win State, and my plans for next year is to jump at a Division One school,” McGinnis said. “I have offers from Washington State University, University of Washington, Montana State University, Clemson and a bunch of small schools but not all of the offers are the same amount. I want to go somewhere warm.”

As for training, McGinnis practices every day and lifts three times a week.

“He’s always doing drills, working hard, going to clinics, and lifting. It’s just really a positive vibe to run by the high jump pit because Killion is always there encouraging others,” senior track athlete Reid Lovercamp said.

“Right now I’m leaning towards going to MSU next year because they have offered the most,” McGinnis said.
