New director leads choir to success
The Wenatchee High School choir drew a crowd of approximately 300 to the Fall Concert led by new WHS choir director Dawn McCormick on Oct. 9.
The event consisted of a mix of gospel, classical, and folk songs. Audience favorites were the bass clef group’s performance of “Cindy,” an upbeat folk song, and the chamber singer’s serenade of “Lonesome Road,” according to bass clef singer sophomore Dustin Jackson.
McCormick has taken the place of former WHS choir director Matt Lodge after his resignation last year. “I would like to keep the reputation of a successful program,” said McCormick. “I want to build on it and keep it up there. ” McCormick transferred to Wenatchee High School after directing choir for Cashmere High School and Cashmere Middle School for 14 years.
The program’s next event will be a performance by the WHS Chamber Singers at Central Washington University on Nov. 20, followed by the Madrigal Feaste fundraiser on Dec. 5, 6, and 7. Sophomore Quinton Latimer, a tenor for the WHS chamber singers, believes in the choir’s capability in these upcoming events. “As a first-year Chamber Singer, I think we are going to perform well. [McCormick’s] style of teaching is different from Mr. Lodge’s,” said Latimer. “It’s different, but effective.”
