OPINION: Pajama day is “silly” in high school

The fact that Wenatchee High School students actively participate in pajama day completely baffles me. Sure, this day is popular in preschool and elementary school, but you would think that by the time students reach high school, it would be considered juvenile and immature.

I have been informed that a large number of WHS students took part in recent pajama day, along with the Dean of Students and other administrative staff. I was shocked by the lapse in judgment by these officials.

Personally, I’ve never understood what the purpose of pajama day is or what it accomplishes in a school setting. Some students or educators might say it is a fun part of the themed spirit week activities, but certainly there is a better way to unify the school than by wearing pajamas in public.

In my research of pajama day, I’ve learned that many high schools throughout the country are now banning pajamas, citing for safety reasons. I don’t think that safety is the real reason; school officials are just too chicken to tell students that pajamas are inappropriate school clothing.

The clothing industry’s term for pajamas is sleepwear. As stated clearly in the name, “sleepwear” is worn to sleep. One may also wear their pajamas when relaxing or when ill in bed. Now tell me, how can these clothes possibly enhance school spirit?

We hear people say, “I can’t wait to get home and change out of these clothes, into my pajamas,” all the time. For me, “home” is the key word in that sentence.

Simply stated, sleepwear is not appropriate to wear in public.
