Sophomore Grady Miller defends his opponent from Sunnyside on Jan. 17. Miller was the third lead scorer with 11 points, contributing to the Panther’s 81-42 win.

Senior Dillon Sugg and sophomore Gavin Long led the Wenatchee High School boys basketball team to a win against Sunnyside 81-42 on Jan. 17 with a career high for both Sugg and Long. Sugg scored 31 points and Long scored 21 points.

Sugg and Long also led the scoreboards with 13 points from Sugg and 12 points from Long against Eastmont Jan. 18. Sophomore Grady Miller was close behind with 11 points during the SHS game and 9 points during the EHS game. Despite their best efforts, the team lost to Eastmont High School, 60-51.

“It [the season] is going pretty good, we’re winning games and having fun,” junior Trey Adams said, “Offensively we’re doing really good, we’re scoring a lot.”

Junior Chase Resch, who scored 10 of the 51 points during the EHS game, believes they are talented but thinks the team could work on playing the first half of the game like they do the last. “We usually do really good in the second half but we should be playing the whole game like that,” Resch said.

Interim Head Coach Mike Franza is optimistic about the seasons future, although he agrees with Resch that the team needs to play the first half like they do the second.

According to Adams the highlight of the season was either his, “amazing behind the back pass during practice one day” or the time Miller got a technical after dunking and hanging on the rim. But Resch believes Miller is standing out because of his ability to be in the right spots at the right time and defensively performs well.

Tony Esquivel, a freshman on varsity, is standing out to Adams. “He’s really good, really quick and a really good guy.”
Both Resch and Adams believe the amount of people that attend their games is lacking. “A loud gym is a happy gym,” Resch said. Adams informs fans that, “If they want to see some pretty sweet pre-game dunks, come.” The boys next game is against Eisenhower High School Jan. 24 at Eisenhower.
