Sports Med sets new record at State competition

The Wenatchee High School Sports Medicine team placed second out of 42 teams April 25-26, at the 20th Annual Washington Career and Technical Sports Medicine Association State Championships (WCTSMA) in Yakima. The competition hosted 42 schools and over 660 students. Issaquah won the overall team title.

Senior Wendy Gong clenched the individual sports medicine State championship by placing above more than 200 students.

At the competition, Wenatchee set a new state record as the only school to place in the top four of the competition for 20 consecutive years. Wenatchee also earned the honor of Academic State Champions. In all, Wenatchee Sports Med received 16 awards at this State competition.

WHS seniors Daniel Poulson and Jackie Bollinger earned All-State honors by placing seventh and 10th in their division. Gong was also deemed the Top Senior award for best score and grade point average combination.

Junior Mark Fisher placed sixth in the Anatomy and Physiology events and junior Lexi Heuchert placed 10th in Program Application/Interview. Senior Katie Cordes also managed to place second in the CPR competition.

Wenatchee also surpassed expectations in the JV competition with six students placing in the top 10: sophomore Christian Brandt-Sims (second), Danika Kapaekis (fifth), sophomoreJulia Jobe (sixth), seniorTucker Reid and junior Jessi Fore (tied, eighth), and sophomore Evie Hyde (10th).

Wenatchee also competed in the State Quiz Bowl competition with Sports Med members Brandt-Sims, Jobe, Hyde, seniorSamantha Hyvari, and senior Jennifer Gould. Jobe was selected to the 2014-15 WCTSMA Student Board of Directors.

“I’m excited, and nervous for the position on the board,” Jobe said. Jobe’s duties will be to plan all regional events for the WCTSMA.

Senior Brittany McCrum and senior Amelia Harris won “best in class” with their poster presentation, “The Female Triad.”
