Sports Medicine places second at State competition
Wenatchee High School’s Sports Medicine students placed second at the state championships on April 22-23, and earned the academic state champion team award. The competition was held in Kennewick and featured 48 schools and more than 800 students.
In the Varsity Sports Medicine category, all of Wenatchee’s team members placed in the top 20. Senior Danika Kapeikis placed fifth, and earned All-State distinction. Other members of the team included senior Christian Brandt-Sims (11th), junior Sabrina Zhu (12th), senior Brenda Castaneda (16th), senior Evie Hyde (18th), and senior Julia Jobe (19th).
Both Zhu and junior Alex Medina were chosen to be on the 2016-17 Washington Career and Technical Sports Medicine Association (WCTSMA) Student Leadership board. Jobe and senior Kayli Brown hosted this year’s competition as members of the 2015-16 Leadership board.
Hyde was selected as the recipient of the WCTSMA Scholarship, and also won the state championship in the Program Application/Interview category. Brown placed third in the category.
Of the 16 students on Wenatchee’s JV team, all placed in the top 40, while three placed in the top 10 with sophomore Nat Poulson placing fourth, senior Brandon Thompson seventh and sophomore Lily Bollinger eighth.
In specialty categories, sophomore Gray Kolde placed second in Exercise Science and junior Shea Frantz fourth in CPR.
