The Wenatchee High School varsity tennis team had a tournament at Sunnyside on April 15 and played Richland March 19, where the girls team defeated Richland in a close match.

The girls team beat Richland Saturday March 19 after a close six matches. Nelson drew the matches to a close with a win in third singles. Richland and Wenatchee were tied until Nelson’s match, where she defeated her opponent to give WHS the overall win.

During the boys matches, junior Kyle Norland and senior Sohail Qazi won their doubles matches 6-1, 6-0. In singles, sophomore Cameron Mandelis won 6-0, 6-0. Senior Lucas Tilly also won his singles match.

This weekend the girls and boys varsity tennis team will be attending the Capital Invite in Boise, Idaho.

“It’s just for extra games and practice,” sophomore Madison Hallberg said.

Hallberg also mentioned that the team keeps improving  and she is excited for the invite this weekend.

“Hannah Stonas is a freshman in our number one singles position which is really good,” Hallberg said. “She cheers you on when she’s not playing and she is really fun to watch play. She’s a good teammate.”

“Our team is really strong this year, we have a lot of really good new players and really good returning players and a stronger line up so our coach can pretty much put a lot of different players anywhere that he wants to, so I think this year we have a good chance getting people to state and hopefully will win Districts again,” Stefanides said.
