Yakking in Yakima – debate team wins big
Wenatchee High School’s Speech and Debate team placed in several different events, coming away with two individual first-place trophies at the 16th annual Thomas S. Foley Memorial Forensics Tournament in Spokane last weekend.
The tournament was held at University High School. Junior Vivian Noyd and senior Abby Davison finished as the fifth and 10th highest individual point earners. WHS took sixth place overall.
There were 30 teams from six states attending.
Eight different students from WHS earned various first, second, third, and finalist awards. Freshman Cassandra Noyd earned first place in JV Congressional Debate, and was a finalist for Novice Expository Speaking. The finalist for Congressional Debate was senior Isa Bekker. The first place Open John D. Clark Legal Argument was won by junior Vivian Noyd, who was also the Open Prepared Story Telling finalist. Senior Abby Davison was the finalist for Open After Dinner Speaking and Open Congressional Debate.
“The entire team represented very well at a high-stakes tournament,” coach Dave Carlson said, “This gives the entire team a lot of momentum going into the state qualifiers next weekend.”
The district’s regional tournament and qualifiers for the state forensics tournament will take place on Feb 12-13 at Eisenhower High School in Yakima.
