Debate team captains reel in first-place awards

Team captains Abby Davison and Vivian Noyd each earned first-place awards to lead the way for the Wenatchee High School Speech and Debate Team at the Feline Frenzy Invitational Tournament on Dec. 4-5 at Spokane.

The team brought home a handful of individual awards from the tournament, which hosted 15 high school teams from three different states.

Davison took first place in Humorous Interpretation, she also took fifth in Mock Congress and Noyd took first place in Original Oratory, second place in Extemporaneous Speaking and second place in Mock Congress. Four other members of the Debate Team place in the top five.

“The results really show the amount of preparation our students put into their events,” head debate coach Dave Carlson said. “For our students to go to this tournament, and place so high in the drama/speech events, especially in a community with such a strong theater presence, is really telling of their ability and work ethic.”

The club provides the opportunity for students to compete at the local, state, and national level in different debate, speech and drama events. Competitors may also earn lifelong membership in the National Forensics League, and the national honor society for public speaking. The season culminates at the State championship in March.
