Debate team excels in Ephrata

The Wenatchee High School debate team won the Ephrata Debate Tournament last Saturday. Many schools attended including Ephrata, Southridge, Chiawana, and Eastmont.

The tournament was the first Wenatchee has participated in this year.

Wenatchee won best overall team, best overall individual, and best overall debate.

“This year we were large in numbers thanks to a bunch of new members, therefore we got to be in the big school division,” sophomore Sebastian Pasion said. “This was the biggest win we have had in awhile.”

Wenatchee also won 27 out of the 60 individual awards. Wenatchee is currently ranked seventh out of 10 teams in the Inland Empire District. They are ranked with 32 points. The first place team is Lake City High School out of Idaho with 146 points.

The debate team’s next tournament is this weekend on Saturday, Nov. 7, at Gig Harbor and they plan to take all the returning debate members to, “a pretty tough, high quality tournament,” Debate Adviser Dave Carlson said.

The entire debate team will compete again on Nov. 21 at Chiawana High School.
