Debater reaches fifth-place finish in State Competition

Wenatchee High School Debate Team co-captain and junior Vivian Noyd broke into the final round at the State and Congressional Debate Championship Tournament March 11-12 in Spokane.

Noyd, who was the Regional Congressional Debate champion, argued bills in an intense final round for four hours, eventually placing fifth place.

Noyd and senior Abby Davison are the only two students from the WHS Speech and Debate Team who will compete at Nationals this year in Salt Lake City. Noyd will be competing in Domestic Extemporaneous, while Davison will competing in Humorous Interp.

“It was very exciting to see the level of talent and dedication of my fellow

competitors at State. There is so much work that is involved in this event. This

was my first year competing in Congress, so there was a huge learning curve,” Noyd said.

In Congressional Debate, high school students emulate members of the United States Congress by debating bills and resolutions. Before the event, each school submits mock legislation to each tournament. After the legislation has been compiled, it is distributed to each participating team. Each team attempts to research as many topics as possible, with the goal of being able to speak on both sides of every piece of legislation
