Nancy Guthrie, mother of famous “TODAY” co-anchor, Savannah Guthrie, disappeared from her home in Tucson, Arizona.
She was reported missing on Feb. 1 by her family, after they had concerns of her whereabouts. Guthrie, 84, was dropped off at her house the night of Jan. 31 after spending the evening with her family. The following day around noon, she was reported missing after she failed to show up for church service with a friend of hers. The day following her disappearance, Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos announced that law enforcement has suspicions of foul play.
The timeline of her disappearance is as follows:
Jan. 31 at 5:32 p.m Guthrie went to her family’s home for a game night.
Jan. 31 at 9:48 p.m Guthrie was dropped off at her home, the garage door opened.
Jan. 31 at 9:50 p.m The garage door closed
Feb. 1 at 1:47 a.m The doorbell camera in front of Guthrie’s home was disconnected.
Feb. 1 at 2:28 a.m Guthrie’s pacemaker app shows the pacemaker was disconnected.
Feb. 1 at 11:56 a.m The family goes to check on her.
Feb. 1 at 12:03 p.m Family calls 911 to report her as missing.
Feb. 1 at 12:15 p.m Officers arrive at Guthrie’s residence.
KOLD News has since reported that a ransom note has been received for Guthrie. The note, received on Feb. 2, “Contained specific details about the home and what Nancy Guthrie was wearing that night” (CBS News). The note was intended to be kept private, however the note’s contents have since been released. On Feb. 3, TMZ reported that the letter demanded payment in bitcoin, for the release of Guthrie.
In a video posted to instagram by Savannah Guthrie on Feb. 9, Savannah asks followers for help in the search for her mother.
“We believe our mom is still out there. We need your help. Law enforcement is working tirelessly, around the clock trying to bring her home, trying to find her. She was taken, and we don’t know where, and we need your help,” said Savannah.
On Feb. 10, a person was detained by police during a traffic stop south of Tucson. The individual was detained for questioning in Guthrie’s disappearance. The man who claims to have been detained, Carlos, has been questioned and released in relation to Guthrie’s disappearance. Carlos claimed that it was possible he delivered packages to Guthrie’s address, but he did not know her. His property in Rio Rico has since been searched.
Later on Feb. 10, images surfaced on X, showing an armed individual in a black mask appearing to be tampering with the camera at Guthrie’s front door. The images come from a video that has been “recovered from residual data located in backend systems” FBI Director Kash Patel said. Authorities have not identified the individual.
As of Feb. 12, police have released no new suspects. Authorities are currently examining more of the door camera footage and the desert terrain near Guthrie’s home.
