Last Friday ended the Panther football season in the quarterfinals with a loss to Graham-Kapowsin, 27-7. This is the Panthers’ third time going to State, and they made it as far as they did last year, making the quarterfinals.

“This year was just a strange game,” Head Coach Scott Devereaux said. “We got within scoring position four times and came away with zero points … We couldn’t get the points we needed. We didn’t make plays when we [should have] made plays.”

Wenatchee’s single touchdown was made in the fourth quarter. Senior Killion McGinnis caught a seven-yard pass from junior quarterback Brandon Graves that capped a 59-yard, 12-play drive. Senior Elijah Hurt kicked for the extra point.

Senior Chase Resch rushed for 100 yards on 20 carries, and ended his final game with a career 18 interceptions, breaking the WHS record.

“[Resch] had a pretty good game, he got hurt last week,” Devereaux said, mentioning that the senior had missed some practices. “[He] played his typical game.”

Resch also was honored with the league MVP award, nominated for by Devereaux and voted on by other coaches in the league. Offensively, Resch rushed for 998 yards and nine TDs this season. He also caught four TD passes and had another 316 yards in receiving. As a kick and punt returner, he scored another three TDs. He returned one of his interceptions for another score.

“Chase will be hard to replace, it’s always hard to replace a guy,” Devereaux said. However, he thinks that the other players will step up next year and it will just take “another year of getting stronger and faster.”

“I never want the season to end, I’m always a little depressed,” Devereaux said. He also said that this year’s team had low drama, got along well, and gave their best effort. “That’s why we made it as far as we did.”
