The 2026 Milano-Cortina Winter Olympics have already been full of surprises, especially for Team USA from unexpected falls during figure skating and many major crashes in skiing, this year’s Olympic games has already sparked a lot of debate among fans.
One of the biggest storylines so far has been this years figure skating events and how they did not go as many fans expected, one of America’s top medal favorites Ilia Malinin aka “Quad God” known for being the first to land a quadaxle on competition ice which is exactly how he got his nickname. He struggled during the men’s program and finished well back in 8th place with a score of 264.49 after many falls on the ice. Multiple viewers immediately raised concern and pointed fingers at the ice conditions, wondering if “softer” and “slushy” ice played a role in why the skaters couldn’t perform their best.
“Of course, in the moment, it definitely felt like not only nerves,” In a New York Times article, Malinin said. “But maybe the ice was also not in the best condition for what I would have liked to have. And that is something I cannot complain about because we’re all put in that situation where we all have to skate no matter what happens so that’s not really an excuse I can give.”
Athletes like Corinn Stoddard, an American short track speed skater, even mentioned on social media that the short track ice in Milan was “soft and slushy,” stating it was more suitable for figure skating than speed skating. She noted the conditions were challenging, forced gear adjustments and were causing significant issues for skaters, with some observers calling it the worst ice of the year. But also a lot of other athletes are just saying that nerves and competition pressure played a huge role as well.
The other biggest storyline is on Lindsey Vonn, after retiring in 2019 Vonn decided she wanted to make a comeback at the age of 41. After tearing her ACL in training just one week before the Olympic Games started. Many admired her courage and grit for getting back at the starting gate, but many others questioned if that was the right choice and if it was too risky given her injury. Ultimately, Vonn crashed just 13 seconds into the woman’s downhill race suffering a serious leg fracture that required multiple surgeries in Malian Italy before she could return home. Since then she has shared that although the snow and course was challenging, she has no regrets about making the risky decision to ski for her final Olympic run and that the crash wasn’t due to her prior.
Now that the closing ceremony has come these Olympic Games will most certainly be remembered for both controversy and courage whether it was the questionable ice conditions or the dramatic return of Lindsey Vonn, this year’s Olympic Games have definitely given lots of fans and viewers lots to talk about.
