It’s finally an Olympic year. This years’ Olympic games are hosted in Milan Cortina. The games started up on Feb. 6. As of right now, the events that have finished are alpine skiing, biathlon, freestyle skiing, luge, nordic combined, snowboarding, speed skating, curling and figure skating. Events that are still to come are bobsleigh, ice hockey, cross-country skiing, short track, skeleton and ski jumping. The United States currently holds second place overall with four gold medals, six silver medals and two bronze medals.
Starting with alpine skiing, Switzerland took home the gold medal while the U.S. got silver. In the women’s biathlon France won gold. In women’s freestyle skiing the U.S. skiers won both gold and silver. Italy took home gold in both women’s and men’s in luge. Norway walked away with a first place medal in nordic combined. Japan’s men and women took gold in snowboarding. The U.S. men got another gold medal for speed skating, while the Netherlands took gold for women’s. For curling, Sweden brought home gold. Finally, in figure skating France took gold and the U.S. got silver.
Looking at women’s speed skiing, Lindsey Vonn, a 41 year old U.S. athlete, encountered a gruesome injury. On Jan. 30 Vonn suffered a ruptured ACL during a World Cup race. She decided that she wouldn’t let her torn ACL keep her from competing in the Olympics just one week later. Only 13 seconds into her Olympic run on Feb. 6, Vonn caught a gate with her arm causing her to crash and experience a complex tibial fracture on her left leg that required her to be airlifted from the event. Within the short time since, Vonn has undergone three surgeries in an attempt to reconstruct her leg. Vonn claims that her crash had no correlation with her ACL injury. Though her recovery time will be lengthy, she is in good faith and high hopes.
Another large event that has occurred is Jutta Leerdam’s Olympic record in speed skating with a time of 1:12.31. Leerdam is also known for being the fiance of well known American boxer and Youtuber, Jake Paul. Many videos have surfaced of Paul’s reaction to his fiance’s victory which has brought much more attention to it. Jordan Stolz, American speed skating gold medalist also broke an Olympic record for males in the same event with a time of 1:06.28.
The Olympics still has many events to be held and more records to be broken. The U.S. is hoping to catch up to Norway to finish with an overall win for the 2026 winter Olympics.
