The Wenatchee High School girls basketball team dominated Eastmont on Feb. 7 for the third time this season, winning 57-38. The Panthers were led by junior Amira Chandler with 21 points and six rebounds.

“We had fewer turnovers and were patient and strong with the ball,” Chandler said. “We fed our posts who were able to finish in the paint.”

The Panthers, with a 9-9 record, and now are one step closer to hosting a District playoff game. According to Coach Robin Kansky, the girls must win their next two games against Eisenhower and Davis in order to host the District playoff game. From there, in order to proceed to State, the Panthers must place in the top two.

As the regular season comes to a close, the team shows signs of major improvement after setting a record low number of turnovers against Moses Lake on Jan. 31 at home.

Although the Panthers lost 50-43, they only had 15 turnovers, compared with 33 at their next game on Feb. 1 against Sunnyside, a 56-46 winner.

“Even though we have lost every time to both Moses Lake and Sunnyside, I was expecting to win,” Kansky said. “But on Friday night, we got tired in the fourth quarter and simply failed to execute.”

Kansky agreed that the main reason for the loss against Sunnyside was due to the high number of turnovers. The team has been working on decreasing the number of turnovers since the beginning of the season.

Chandler is currently the team’s leading scorer, averaging 11.5 points per game. Chandler is closely followed by senior Katie Kansky with nine points and sophomore Maddi Hallberg with eight points.
