Junior Carley Gangle powers a ball out to left field at the Panther’s first game of the season on March 19. The Panthers won 15-5. Gangle is a catcher for the varsity team.

The Wenatchee High School fastpitch team opened its season with a 15-5 win over Cascade (Leavenworth) on March 19.

Following the teams win on Wednesday, the team lost to Mount Si on March 21, 13-2.

Despite the loss, sophomore pitcher Kori Martin pitched two shutout innings.

WHS Coach Brent Grothe says he is confident in this year’s group of seniors.

“The outfield is fast, the infield experienced and sure-handed, and the pitching will be reliable,” Grothe said. “Offensively, we have good team speed and a group of girls who love to hit and are willing to work hard at it.”

For WHS, juniors Baylee Fontaine and Carley Gangle each went 3 for 4 against Cascade, while senior Courtney Ahlgren hit a triple, and senior Malaea Taulango hit a pair of doubles.

“Every first game of the season is always a little topsy-turvy and a great opportunity to just have fun,” senior left fielder Abby McKay said. “It showed us what areas we need to work on, but all in all it was a great first game… we all had a blast.”

“I was pleased at the looks we got at individual players in our first game,” Grothe said, “We, like all teams, have much to work on, but we’re off to a focused, enthusiastic start… as we continue to improve, we will be tough. [The team is] a competitive, well-blended team of athletes.”

The next game will be held on March 29 against Sunnyside on the road.
