Tennis kicks off season with a pair of second place finishes

On March 22, the Wenatchee High School girls tennis team tied for second place overall at the Coke Classic tournament, while the boys team got second place overall.

The Coke Classic was hosted by Davis and there were eight schools competing.

“We have several competent, strong players this year,” girls Coach Norm Armstrong said.

The WHS girls team tied with West Valley with a total of 43 team points, while Davis got first place and 45 points. For WHS, juniors Carlie Heuple and Kate Thies took second in their doubles event. Freshman Anna Davenport and senior Olivia Morgan took a third-place finish in doubles, as did senior Ariana Keyser and junior Claire Devereaux. In singles, senior Annie Stefanides took fourth place.

“I think we have a little more depth to our team this year,” Armstrong said. “We’ll be a good opponent for anyone who plays us.”

The boys tennis team scored 47 points behind the first-place Lewis and Clark (54). For Wenatchee, junior Kyle Norland and sophomore Cameron Mandelis took first place in doubles, while seniors Lucas Tilly and Sohail Qazi both got second in their singles events.

“Considering we graduated half our team last year, I’d say second place is very good,” boys Coach Jared Vidano said.
