Despite losing three seniors, the Wenatchee High School bowling team maintains an undefeated record as it continues to improve its performance.

The Panthers began their season with a win over West Valley (1,753-1,610) on Nov. 12 at the Eastmont Lanes. They went on to defeat Sunnyside Nov. 14 with by a score of 1,753-1,540. In their latest victory the Panthers defeated Selah on Nov. 19, 1,899-1,652, in Yakima.

“I think it builds confidence,” Coach Jay Young said of the team’s perfect record. “We aren’t just winning, we are winning!”

This record is attributed to the girls’ willingness to work together and overall friendship, according to Young.

There was an impressive turnout of participating girls, and the Panthers continue to improve in team effort and performance despite losing three seniors from their varsity team last year, according to Young.

Junior Bethany Symonds scored a 215 against West Valley and freshman Delaney Yant a 210 against Selah.

“When you lose three-fifths of your team you don’t know what to expect,” Young said. “I like how the varsity has come together, working together and getting along.”’

The team hopes to claim the league title and host the playoff games and ultimately make it to State, as it did last year. Varsity bowlers also made it to State competition in 2010, according to Symonds.

Symonds praised her coach, saying: “He [Young] always knows when we are having problems with bowling and he knows how to fix it; it’s really helpful.”

The team practices at the Eastmont Lanes and usually has matches every Tuesday and Thursday. Thirty-nine girls joined the team this season.

Next the Panthers prepare to face off against Moses Lake on Dec. 3 at Eastmont Lanes. Moses Lake is the Panthers’ top foe this season, according to Young.
