What’s hot, what’s not: September

What’s Hot

Dave Franco- It’s not hard to see why Dave Franco is a new teen heart throb in Hollywood right now — just look at him. As the younger brother to A-lister, James Franco, it is safe to say that both acting and good looks are in his blood. The fresh-faced 28-year-old star started acting at age 21, but made it big with his role as a popular high school hipster, Eric, in 21 Jump Street, starring Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill. Since then, Franco has started making a name for himself in the filming industry, starring in movies like Warm Bodies and Now You See Me. Currently, Franco is working on a new comedy titled Neighbors, starring big screen actors Zac Efron and Seth Rogen, which will come out sometime next year. With his smoldering eyes and crooked smile, he’s pretty irresistible and is definitely a hot topic right now.

Pleather- With fashion trends constantly flowing in and out of style, it is sometimes hard to tell what’s in and what isn’t. But this year’s trend almost slaps you in the face when you walk into any clothing store. It’s everywhere ….pleather. For the 2013 fall season, fake leather has made its entrance into the fashion world. Pleather skirts, tops, pants, jackets, detailings, accessories, you name it, are in. Perfect for everyone, pleather can be incorporated into almost any outfit to give your style an edgier look. So the next time you go shopping, try something pleather, because this new trend isn’t going anywhere.

“Royals” by Lorde- With pop songs clogging up radio stations, now more than ever, people are looking for something different when it comes to music, and “Royals” by Lorde is just that. The catchy, laid back tune sung by the New Zealand artist is one that stands out from other pop tunes including “Blurred Lines” by Robin Thicke and “We Can’t Stop” by Miley Cyrus. Lorde is comparable and has a similar style to artist such as Florence and the Machine and Lana Del Ray. “Royals” is a refreshing break from the status quo in pop music.

What’s Not

Twerking- The dance craze that swept the nation and the internet this past summer is so out that it’s not even funny. Twerking has been around for years but was recently made popular by comeback star Miley Cyrus in her more-than-controversial music video for “We Can’t Stop.” The provocative hip popping move took over the globe, with people twerking on almost anything they could get their hands on. Videos of people twerking soon populated both YouTube and the social media app Vine almost overnight. Twerking was even added as a word to the Oxford English Dictionary in August of 2013. However, it came and went just as fast when the self-proclaimed “Queen of Twerking” (Miley Cyrus) performed at the 2013 Video Music Awards and ruined the way we look at twerking. Long story short, 10 years from now we look at the “twerking phase” of our lives as a dark part of our history. It was real, it was fun, but now it should be done.

Justin Bieber- While many high school girls might say they like a bad boy, Justin Bieber makes being a bad boy look… well, just bad. Over the past couple months, the Biebs has been caught smoking weed, drinking, showing up late for concerts, peeing in buckets, getting multiple speeding tickets, and dissing former presidents. The list goes on and on. From being a majorly successful artist at such a young age, many are starting to wonder if Bieber will fall into the tragic pit of self destruction that many young stars stumble into. Many celebrities have even reached out to Bieber in attempts to try and put him back on the right path. Big screen actor Mark Wahlberg even said, “Don’t be so naughty. Be a nice boy, pull up your trousers, make your mom proud.” Having not put out any new music in awhile, it seems all the Biebs has been doing lately is making a mess of his publicity. While we can only hope he gets back on track soon, right now Justin Bieber is anything but a hot commodity.

Colored Skinny Jeans- It was just last year that you couldn’t walk into any clothing store without seeing a designated area for colored skinny jeans. They were everywhere. Billboards, advertisments, runways, magazines, school hallways, and most likely in your very own closet, but for this season, in your closet is where they should stay. For the fall and winter season, stick to your classic denim or neutral colored pants and utilize your tops to add color to your outfits. This is the perfect time to change up your look. Go for skirts and dresses with tights instead of pants and try something new. Now don’t worry if all you have is a closet full of colorful pants. They just aren’t in trend right now, but with our generation’s inability to make up our minds, it’s highly probable they’ll be back in style soon.
