ASB raises money for community

While most Homecoming events seek to benefit the school, this year ASB has looked toward a larger audience: the Wenatchee Valley community.

Through the traditional events, Powder Puff and Buff Puff, around $3,000 was raised due to entry fees, concessions, and team costs. This money was donated to breast cancer and prostate cancer research for the first time. This is only the beginning for a student government with many more plans to give back to the community, said ASB Vice President Madi McLaughlin.

“I think that a lot of the ASB events this year have been community-based because our main focus is to improve the community within WHS, and every student is a part of the greater Wenatchee community. These two groupings of people walk hand in hand, and improve as the other improves or vice versa,” McLaughlin said.

In order to bring these two groups together, ASB has already moved on to its next project. This time they hope to address one of the biggest needs during the cold-weather months: socks. Through the aptly named event “Socktober,” ASB is focusing on getting new and slightly used socks donated to local charities from Oct. 24 to Nov. 3. If the school reaches the goal of 2,000 pairs of socks, ASB is aiming to reward the school with an hour-long lunch and the winning second period that donates the most socks, free Dutch Bros. coffee.

Ryen Hunsaker, junior class president, said it is important to donate an item that is usually overlooked, yet so essential for people of all ages.

“ASB is really excited to be running Socktober this year,” Hunsaker said. “We hope to collect as many pairs of socks as possible to donate to local charity organizations. Hopefully we can make a difference in the lives of those truly in need.”
