Drama club schedules spring play auditions

Auditions for the spring play Free To Be You and Me begin Jan. 20 and a meeting will be held Jan. 14 after school in the auditorium to discuss auditions and the show.

Every year I like to switch it up, I haven’t done this since Schoolhouse Rock.

— Paul Atwood, Director

As a drama, this show differs from musical plays shown at Wenatchee High School, because it’s composed of a series of scenes and smaller stories. Based in the late ‘70s, this show explains what it’s like growing up as a child through little songs and skits.

“A lot of small scenes opposed to one long setting, [and] not every scene will have a singer,” Producer Jill Sheets said. Some audiences are used to constant singing from shows like Hairspray and Shrek, but that won’t be the case this spring.

“Every year I like to switch it up, I haven’t done this since Schoolhouse Rock,” Director Paul Atwood said.

Free To Be You and Me might be a little more difficult to sell tickets to. “[What’s] most challenging is it’s not a well-known show,” Sheets said. “Younger generations don’t know about this play.”

The show runs March 18-21. The show will be available to other Wenatchee students prior to opening, Atwood said. He plans to invite other schools in the district.

“We’ll have schools come up to see the show,” Atwood said. “[I would like to] do something very educational this time around — I saw this when we were in school. It’s going to be a great show, should be a lot of fun.”
